Employment Opportunities: Controls Engineer, Electrical Panel Builder

Position Title: Controls Engineer

Job Summary:

Compass Automation is a leading supplier of custom automation assembly, inspection, and material handling equipment in the Chicago-land area and is currently seeking a self-motivated individual who is eager to learn. All of the machines that we design are unique and utilize cutting edge technology. We employ a diverse staff of exceptionally talented, hands on engineers. Our customers include large manufacturing companies across a wide range of industries. The primary function of a Controls Engineer at Compass is to create complete electrical hardware and software designs for custom-designed machines.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Electrical Engineering:

  1. Create electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics
  2. Create bills of materials (BOMs)
  3. Interface with electricians to ensure electrical panels are built properly, and all field wiring/plumbing is completed consistent with all relevant electrical codes
  4. Test and verify all I/O, safety circuits, etc.

Software Development:

  1. Develop manual functions and automatic sequences required for machine controls. Note that the following controls architectures will be employed:
    1. PLCs
    2. Robots
    3. HMIs
    4. Servos
    5. Vision
    6. Ensure all controls interlocks are in place to prevent mechanical collisions, and facilitate safe machine functioning
    7. Ensure safety systems meet all relevant OSHA standards
    8. Develop all relevant machine documentation pertaining to schematics, programs, and general machine operation

System Installation, Startup, and Training

  1. Verify machine functionality on-site at the customer's facility post installation
  2. Assist customer in testing and documenting final machine operation
  3. Provide training and support to customer as needed

Skills and Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or similar discipline
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical or similar
  • Basic experience with the following industrial control systems:
  1. PLC controls (Allen-Bradley or Siemens preferred)
  2. Industrial robots (Fanuc preferred)
  3. Servo controls
  4. HMIs
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Willingness to travel (up to 25% travel is possible)

All of the machines that we design are unique and utilize cutting edge technology. We employ a diverse staff of exceptionally talented, hands on employees. Our customers include large manufacturing companies across a wide range of industries. The primary function of an Electrical Panel Builder is to construct electrical panels, junction boxes, HMI enclosures, and the other various electrical systems required to control our custom automated machines.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Read electrical schematics, identify electrical schematic symbols, and pull the associated parts/components from inventory
  2. Layout electrical panels per the electrical layout drawings developed by the Electrical Engineering Department
  3. Drill/tap panels to mount all electrical components
  4. Perform point-to-point wiring between electrical components
  5. Mount panels in electrical enclosures, and punch/drill enclosures to connect panels to main system

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Ability to read electrical schematics
  • Ability to read electrical layout drawings
  • General familiarity with hand and power tools (cutters, crimpers, drills, etc.)
  • Self-motivated, hard-working individual
  • 1-3 years experience preferred
  • The ideal candidate will be bilingual in either English/Polish or English/Spanish
